An accountant has been hit with a jail sentence after she stole thousands from a firm.
Former finance director, Karen Carberry, 47, Surrey, was jailed for four years on the 31st of October for stealing more than £300,000 from her employer.
She was found guilty at the Old Bailey of one count of fraud by abuse of position, another of obtaining a pecuniary advantage and two counts of using fraud as a false investment.
Investigations also uncovered that she was not a qualified accountant and had provided fake qualification certificates at the start of her employment. As a result of the investigation’s discoveries she was dismissed for gross misconduct.
In regards to the case and the consequent sentencing, leader of the investigation Detective Inspector Robert Stirling of the City of London Police Fraud Squad said: “Carberry wanted to fund a luxury lifestyle which she was unable to afford.
“Not only did she abuse her position of trust within the company and use her power to steal money, but also lied from the outset and claimed to have qualifications which she had never worked for.
She was employed by an international recruitment firm in 2001 as a Senior Qualified Accountant. Carbery claimed that she qualified as an accountant in 1996. Over her 11 years with the firm, she advanced to reach the position of Director.
The company’s accounts were scrutinised by colleagues when she was away on holiday in 2012. It was then when it became apparent that she had been transferring company money into her personal accounts. She would then balance the books to conceal her activity.
Inspector Stirling added: “The fraud department will continue to use its expertise and experience to bring those who commit these types of fraud to justice”.
