In the Spotlight with Simon Mules of Nemo Personal Finance
Simon Mules of Nemo Personal Finance gives us the inside track on beach bars, Thailand and persuading lenders to part with their cash...
1. How long have you been at Nemo and what is your role?
I joined Nemo in May 2005 having previously worked for the parent company (Principality Building Society). My role is Head of Sales which looks after both the Wholesale and Retail teams. Basically looking after all broker introduced business and our own sales team.
2. What do you see happening in the secured lending industry in the next 12 months?
Every lender (and broker) is doing it’s utmost to move (‘inch’) the market forward. I suspect that this is likely to continue over the course of the next 12 months.
3. What is the best thing about your job?
It has to be people, both the staff within Nemo and those that work in brokers. I’d even go as far as our two Business Development Managers,Craig Marshall and Craig Collins.
4. What inspired you to get into the secured loan industry?
I was making a presentation at the Principality staff conference when Nemo was evolving and met Sam Marshall (Joint MD of Nemo) who ‘sold’ the vision along with frequent trips to watch his beloved Falkirk!
5. If you weren’t working at Nemo what would you be doing?
In the current climate that’s difficult…but running a beach bar would be nice!
6. What do you like to do on your weekends off?
Mixture of watching sport (Leeds United) and socialising with friends.
7. What’s the biggest issue you have to deal with at the moment in the secured lending area?
All lenders and their management teams recognise the opportunities that exist in the market place, the ‘biggest issue’ currently is persuading funders to part with their money at acceptable prices and criteria.
8. Where is your favourite destination in the world and why?
Thailand was great…went with friends and found the whole experience exciting, all of the sites are ‘strangely attractive’..but would settle for most places that are warm and sunny.
9. What was the most memorable case you have dealt with this year?
Almost impossible to answer, there is a real drive at Nemo with all cases to try and provide brokers with the service they need and I’d have to give credit to Brian Pope and his team for dealing with case issues on a day to day basis.
10. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Professional Sportsman (Football or Cricket). …lack of talent ended that one!
