Fraudster uses 128 identities to swindle banks out of £650k
A London man who created 128 aliases of himself in order to steal £650,000 has been jailed.
30-year-old David Peters was sentenced to five years and eight month at the Old Bailey, for his part in the ‘biggest case of identity theft’ in City of London Police history.
The court heard how Peters targeted rural post offices’ staff to assist him in obtaining driving licences using fake documents. He then used the licences to open bank accounts, claim housing benefits, and obtain mortgages worth in excess of £400,000.
Peters secured a £250,000 mortgage for a house in Edgeware, London, and also a second mortgage on a flat in Essex worth over £157,495.
All in all, Peters fleeced banks, mortgage lenders and government agencies.
In one case, he stole £168,575 in benefits from three London councils by claiming that he was the landlord and the tenant.
He then splashed the cash, which he accumulated over an eight year period, on designer clothes, expensive cars and other luxuries.
Peters, also named Oluseyi Jeremiah Adebayo on court documents, was caught in 2010 after the City of London police launched an investigation based on a tip-off from DVLA and DWP.
During investigations it was discovered that he had applied for and received 74 UK driving licences under false names.
Peters admitted multiple counts of making a false statement with a view to obtaining benefit; possession of criminal property; obtaining property by deception; fraud and possession of false identification documents.
Chris Beedle, Department of Work and Pensions fraud investigator, told the Hendon and Finchley Times: “Benefit fraud is a crime and in this case vital benefits were used to fuel a lavish lifestyle at the expense of the taxpayer.”
